BACK-TO-BACK WIN FOR THE UP BAGUIO INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT TEAM IN THE REGIONAL BUSINESS CASE COMPETITION
History was written in the 7th PPM Regional Business Case Competition held in Jakarta, Indonesia last November 29-30, 2016, when once again, the UP Baguio Institute of Management team proved its mettle and finest in analyzing business cases when it capped the first major place besting other 11 finalists from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The team composed of Judylyn L. Custodio, Marie Louise P. Gomez and Mark Joel M. Suratos, all senior Master of Management students of the Institute of Management, showed their best when they beat three other finalists in the second and final round of the competition. They were awarded a cash prize of US$2,000 in addition to certificates of recognition. For the year 2016, the case analysis was focused on PT Tatalogam Lestari, the largest metal and lightweight steel tile company in Indonesia. The company was founded in 1990 and based in Jakarta. It is engaged in the production of roof tile metal and light steel frame.
The winning team ranked fourth of the twelve finalists in the stiff pre-qualifying competition in which 52 teams from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines participated The UP Baguio team edged out second placer Binus School of Business of Indonesia by a very narrow margin of points. The third major place was awarded to PPM School of Management, also from Indonesia, and the fourth place was won by the University of the Philippines Los Banos.
The winning UP Baguio team was mentored and coached by Dr. Bienvenido C. Marzan, Director of the Institute of Management and Mr. Roberto Goce, IM Lecturer. Last year, the UP Baguio team composed of Serafin Oliviere Lasquety III, Clifford Chan and Hope Alegria Shin, also impressed the judges with their ability and skill to respond to challenging questions regarding the case they analyzed which won them the first place.
The annual PPM RBCC is a highly competitive event of teams of students in the masteral level from various graduate schools in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Singapore, China and the Philippines. In the preliminary competition. the participating teams submit and compete in analyzing actual business case and in formulating business case solutions. Out of these teams, 12 finalists are chosen to present their business analysis and answer challenging questions from the judges. In second and final round, four finalists are chosen from the twelve participating teams and compete in responding to questions in the areas of finance, marketing, operations, strategic management and human resources management related to the case. This is the fifth year of the Institute’s participation where the UP Baguio team also ranked fifth (5th) in the final round in 2012. In 2014, the UP Baguio’s team of Adrian Reci Galang, Frederick Magno and Sinta Cando won 2nd place (B. C. Marzan).
