DEPARTMENT OF
PHYSICAL SCIENCES (DPS)
From serving as three disciplines under the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at the then University of the Philippines College Baguio (UPCB), the Department of Physical Sciences (DPS) came about in 2002 when UPCB became one of the constituent universities of the University of the Philippines and became the University of the Philippines Baguio. DPS currently has three disciplines – the Discipline of Physics, the Discipline of Chemistry, and the Discipline of Geology.
The Department of Physical Sciences aims to become the center of excellence in the physical sciences in teaching, research, extension, and public service. Our vision is to become the hub for teaching and research where people can engage in conversations and exchange ideas in teaching, conceptualize ideas and collaborate in research, and provide solutions through public service that directly affect society.
Currently, the department offers a Bachelor’s degree program in Physics. The four-year BS Physics program equips students with observational, analytical, and critical thinking skills for careers in research, academia, and industry. The program provides competence in basic and applied sciences to enable them, upon graduation, to pursue advanced studies in the field, teaching careers, and technical jobs in the country and abroad, and to conduct theoretical or applied research. The profile of our graduates, our faculty, and our research staff has made UP Baguio the center of Physics education and research in Northern Luzon.
We are also undergoing an AUN-QA assessment. The ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) Network was created to realise the mission of harmonising educational standards and seeking continuous improvement of academic quality of universities in the ASEAN region. To accomplish its mission, AUN-QA conducts quality assessments for Higher Education Institutions that are members of its network. (https://aunsec.org/)

The department’s main objective is to establish a research facility and implement academic programs. It envisions being a hub where individuals from Northern Luzon can gather information, engage in research and teaching discussions, and share their research outputs, either physically or virtually. Currently, the department offers a baccalaureate degree program in Physics.

The BS Physics Program
The program provides a strong foundation in basic and applied sciences, enabling graduates to pursue advanced studies, teaching positions, technical jobs, and theoretical or applied research. The dedication of the faculty, research staff, and graduates has solidified UP Baguio’s reputation as a center for Physics education and research in Northern Luzon.
The curriculum is designed to allow the student an in-depth study of standard undergraduate courses Physics and electives that would lead the student to a specialization area of Physics in preparation for their thesis or research work. The BS Physics Curriculum starts from the core courses and then proceeds to the major courses as aligned with the CHED guidelines. Students are also required to choose from a variety of qualified electives.
